The QJZ89 is a heavy machine gun (HMG) featured in Squad, introduced in the version 4.0 as part of the Red Star Rising update for the People’s Liberation Army.

General Information[]

The QJZ89, also known as the Type 89 Heavy Machine Gun (Chinese: 89式重机枪), is a heavy machine gun designed by Norinco for the People’s Liberation Army and fires 12.7×108mm ammunition. Born to the strict requirement to reduce weight while having a manageable recoil, the weapon features an unusual hybrid gas- and recoil-operated action. The gas system cycles the bolt group with the receiver recoil inside the outer gun housing to decrease peak recoil. Aside from the recoiling barrel group, the gun features a direct impingement gas system modified from the Type 85 machine gun.

The weapon entered service in 1989 and was nicknamed lightweight heavy machine gun due to its lightweight construction. The gun and tripod together only weigh 26 kg (57 lb), which is even lighter than the 32 kg (71 lb) Russian Kord machine gun on the bipod mount and the 33 kg (74 lb) XM806 experimental lightweight machine gun on tripod. This allows the heavy machine gun to be operated by a 2-man team like GPMG or by a single person.

Variants[]

Gameplay[]

  • Can be fired only on automatic.
  • A QJZ89 ammunition belt can hold 100 rounds.
  • The regular QJZ89 emplacement comes only with an iron sight and no gun shield, hindering its long-range fighting capability and protection.
    • However, the bunker variant comes with a YMA89 static zoom scope with ranging marks.
  • The emplaced QJZ89 comes with a semi-high-profile tripod, which could be protected behind two layers of sandbags. The tripod's height is slightly lower than that of DShK-M.
    • The high-profile tripod allows a 360° traverse. But beware, the tripod height leaves the gunner much more exposed than those operating M2A1 or NSV emplacements.
  • The effective range of the QJZ89 is 1.8 kilometers.
  • The firepower of this 12.7x108mm machine gun should not be underestimated, as those bullets penetrate all current in-game armored vehicles and dispose groups of enemy personnel with relative ease.
    • 12.7x108mm can penetrate every vehicle in-game except M2A3 and main battle tanks.
    • It can also penetrate thinner walls, meaning that you can neutralize shielded or covered enemy infantry.
    • It can also penetrate the bulletproof windshields of other light vehicles, killing infantry inside directly.
  • Armour calculation involves many factors that are not limited to simple base damage and penetration. The slope of the armor, its thickness, the angle of hit, all of that matter when the game engine decides if damage has been dealt to the target.
    • Prioritizing areas such as flat armor angles, turret, and rear areas, which are less effective against the 12.7x108mm.
  • Firing in short bursts is extremely effective in long-range engagements. The vehicle-mounted machine guns also overheat if the trigger is held down for too long, so firing in short bursts also lengthens the total firing time of the weapon.
  • Like all heavy machine guns, it features a long reload time. Conservation of ammunition will prove helpful to last through your ammunition belt instead of burning through it so that you do not have to reload at the wrong time.
  • QJZ89 shares its damage model, penetration, and ballistic performance with QJC88.
    • QJZ89 also shares its damage model and penetration with NSV and Kord. However, it has a slightly lower muzzle velocity at 850 m/s.
    • The fire rate of 700 RPM is higher than that of the M2A1 (500 RPM) and DShK-M (600 RPM), allowing the gunner to more liberally spray targets. However, the machine gun will overheat with sustained fire.
