General Information[]

The U.S. Army general issue AN-M18 coloured smoke grenade is used as a ground to ground or ground to air signaling or a screening device for unit maneuvering. The AN-M18 replaced the Second World War era M16 smoke grenade. The M18 comes in four colours red, green, yellow and violet. The top of the M18 was painted with the colour contained inside for identification purposes, the label The smoke grenade weighs five hundred and forty grams and the average male soldier can throw it approximately thirty metres.

The M18 can be thrown approximately thirty-five metres across a flat surface. Immediately after the grenade is thrown a coloured trail is visible, giving away the thrower's location. After the M18 is thrown, smoke is released after four seconds. The smoke is fully deployed after thirteen seconds. The smoke lasts for one minute and twenty seconds. The M18 is available in white, red and blue. M18 distribution varies depending on your role
