The L21A1 RARDEN is an autocannon featured in Squad as vehicle armament for various vehicles.

General Information[]

The L21A1 RARDEN ("Royal Armament, Research and Development Establishment" and "Enfield") is a British 30 mm autocannon used as a combat vehicle weapon. The Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment (RARDE) and the Royal Small Arms Factory (RSAF), part of the Ministry of Defence, at the time.

The weapon uses a long recoil system of operation for minimum recoil forces on the mounting and vehicle. Spent cases are ejected forwards. The weapon was also designed for minimum inboard length, allowing for more space in the turret or a smaller turret. Another feature is that no gun gas escapes into the turret.

The cartridge case used is 170 mm long and based on the Hispano-Suiza 831-L round.

Variants[]

  • The L21A2 RARDEN is available to one faction only, the British Army.
  • One vehicle variant is equipped with L21A2 RARDEN: FV510.

Gameplay[]

  • The effective range of the L21A2 RARDEN is 3 kilometers with HE and 4 kilometers with AP.
  • The L21A2 RARDEN uses smaller magazine clips for reloading, with each magazine having six rounds. For the AP and HE round, the FV510 can carry 19 magazines for each type.
  • The L21A2 RARDEN has two types of ammunition available: NM225 AP and NM232 HE.
    • AP round is effective for anti-vehicles, while HE round is used for anti-infantry engagements.
    • The rate of fire of the RARDEN is 90 RPM, which is very slow for an autocannon. This reduces the damage potential for NM225 AP and NM232. But the autocannon is still potent in long-range engagement due to higher accuracy.
  • The NM225 AP is an extremely powerful and high-damage AP round that can penetrate every vehicle in-game, including main battle tanks if shot from the side and rear.
    • The NM225 AP is especially competent at destroying lightly armored vehicles effectively.
    • The NM225 AP is one of the most powerful autocannon AP shells in the game. With high base damage at 600 and a very high penetration at 105 mm, which is only beaten by Britain's own CTAS40. This is only matched by the DTC041A-30 fired by the Chinese ZPT99.
    • The RARDEN AP has a decent level of muzzle velocity for autocannons, at 1300 m/s. This is faster than older Soviet ammunition but slower than new Chinese and American APFSDS rounds.
  • The NM232 HE shares its damage model and penetration with other vehicle autocannons, specifically to the M242 Bushmaster HE round.
    • It has one of the fastest muzzle velocities for the autocannon HE rounds, at 1100 m/s.
  • Armour calculation involves many factors that are not limited to simple base damage and penetration. The slope of the armor, its thickness, the angle of hit, all of that matter when the game engine decides if damage has been dealt to the target.
    • Prioritizing areas such as flat armor angles, side, tracks, turret, and rear areas, which are less effective against the autocannon AP.
  • In a skirmish, opening your fight with a disability attack is advised. Shooting the tracks or wheels of your enemy can severely disable their mobility. The disabled enemy vehicle will come to a halt and remain stationary, becoming an easy target for you to finish off. They are also more prone to flanking, allowing you to circle around and target their areas with thin armor.
    • Do not use GP round to engage vehicles unless for last resort, as it has only 8 mm penetration, which cannot damage the vast majority of the armored vehicle in-game.
    • The enemy crew may attempt to leave the disabled vehicle and perform battlefield repair, leaving them vulnerable to fire from you and friendly infantry.
    • It's also a great practice to disable the turret first, especially for heavier vehicles such as infantry fighting vehicles and main battle tanks. The disabled turret will lose the stabilizer function, turret traverse, and block their HUD with glass cracks.
  • Aside from penetration, vehicle health is another crucial factor to consider. Consider the damage output of your vehicle and plan out the engagement with the tactical maneuvers. It's highly advised to engage the enemy while they're unaware of your position.
    • Typically, Russian/Chinese vehicles have less health than BlueFor. But their autocannons have a higher fire rate.
