| “ | The MEA is a military organisation formed out of the need to coordinate resources and defence policy between a number of aligned nations in the region. Their use of well-trained indigenous personnel and stockpiles of foreign armament means that they are well adapted to fighting against the most technologically advanced of opponents. | „ |
| ~ In-game description |
The Ground Forces of Iran (GFI), formerly Middle Eastern Alliance (MEA), is a playable faction in Squad. This faction is the fifth conventional army featured in the game. It was officially announced on July 21, 2020[1] and was released on September 23, 2020 as part of the v1.0 update.
MEA has been converted to GFI as of v9.0.
History
The military history of Iran has been relatively well-documented, with thousands of years' worth of recorded history. Largely credited to its historically unchanged geographical and geopolitical condition, the modern-day Islamic Republic of Iran (historically known as Persia) has had a long and checkered military culture and history; ranging from triumphant and unchallenged ancient military supremacy, affording effective superpower status for its time; to a series of near-catastrophic defeats (beginning with the destruction of Elam), most notably including the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon as well as the Asiatic nomadic tribes at the northeastern boundary of the lands traditionally home to the Iranian peoples. The modern Iranian army has been active since the islamic revolution in 1979.
Flag
The national flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran, also known as the Tricolour Flag of Iran (Persian: پرچم سهرنگ ایران), is a tricolour featuring the Pan-Iranian colours comprising equal horizontal bands of green, white and red with the national emblem (Allah) in red centred on the white band and the takbir written 11 times each in the Kufic script in white, at the bottom of the green and the top of the red band.

In-Game equipment
The GFI predominantly combines Western firearms with Soviet heavy weapons and vehicles. They are also one of the few factions in the game that predominantly use battle rifles as their primary weapons, which fire full-power rifle rounds, providing high damage and suppression.
Their vehicle fleet consists of multiple light vehicles, a few tracked vehicles, and two types of main battle tanks. A unique feature of GFI vehicles is the additional UB-32 rocket pods, which are mounted on their BRDM-2 scout cars and MT-LBM APCs.

| Named after King Qadesh and his deadly war chariots, the 3rd Mechanized Infantry Brigade is one of the maneuver units of the GFI. Designed around armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles, it can engage even the most modern conventional fighting forces. Its doctrine is inherited from past soviets advisors: its vehicles will deliver infantry as close to the enemy and support them. | |||

| The support battalions of the GFI are the backbone of the alliance's military forces. They bring all necessary ammunitions, fuel and construction materials to the front. Not intended to fight the enemy directly, this unit is able defend itself in a limited capacity. The 2nd Battalion's name, Vizir Hussein, comes from the Vizir that organized the logistics for the siege of Tyr in th 8th Century. | |||

Trivia
- The old faction was inspired by the Middle Eastern Coalition faction in Battlefield 2 and Project Reality.
- Based on the presence of German small arms and Russian equipment, the faction could be partially based on Iran. The current regime is a Russian ally, and the previous regime had some fairly advanced and/or capable Western hardware (F-14, Chieftain tank, G3). Iran did have some T-62s and T-72s that were captured from Iraq as well.
- The faction could also be a fictional stand-in for Iran and Iraq combined and might include places like Syria or Turkey as well.
- In beta testing, the faction was labeled "G3: The Faction." This was later changed, but remnants of this name can still be found buried in the Squad SDK.
- The Ground Forces of Iran used to be called the Middle Eastern Alliance before the v9.0 update that came with new kits, weapons and models.
