The AK-12 is an upgraded version of the AK-74 series of rifles. It is also chambered in 5.45×39mm but with improvements such as picatinny rails for attachments, a free-floated barrel, and a much more sturdy top cover. Despite sharing some components with the AK-74M, it is a standalone rifle and not a retrofit upgrade. It was accepted into service in 2018 and is gradually replacing the AK-74M although the majority have been prioritized to more elite units such as the airborne and special forces.
~ In-game description

Variants

  • AK-12 is available to one faction, the Russian Airborne Forces.
  • Aside from the two optic options, the AK-12 is also available with the Foregrip attachment.
  • AK-12 does not have a carbine derivative. Most VDV roles would instead use the regular AK-12 rifle.

Gameplay

  • The AK-12 magazine holds 30 rounds.
  • Can be fired on automatic or semi-automatic.
  • When the AK-12 is equipped by a Squad Leader, Lead Crewman, and Lead Pilot, every 4th round is a tracer round.
  • The sights for the AK-12 include iron sights, 1P87 holographic sight, and 1P78 (2.8×) optical sight.
    • The iron sight allows the user to zero the rifle for different ranges (from 100m to 800m).
    • The 1P87 holographic sight allows a relatively clear sight picture for close-range combat, but it doesn't allow zeroing, limiting long-range effectiveness.
    • The 1P78 (2.8×) optical sight allows the user to see enemies from long distances easily and engage enemies at longer ranges without the need to zero the weapon.
  • Arguably one of the weaker assault rifles in-game, AK-12 and its variants have slightly less damage at 60 and an overall much shorter effective range, as well as a below-average bullet dispersion performance at 4 MOA.
  • AK-12 shares its damage model and ballistic performance with AK-74M, AKS-74 and AK-74.
    • The 652 rounds per minute rate of fire is below average for an automatic weapon but makes the gun more controllable in close and medium range.
  • AK-12 is classified in-game as Short Rifle. Short rifles and Carbines are well-balanced in handling.
    • They output regular suppression effects, are relatively easy to point fire, and are effective at all ranges.
    • AK-12 has handling parameters different from all other light weapons in-game. It has more recoil than AK-74M, M4A1, and other weapons in the same class. It has a much higher sway and a much lower sway alignment. It also has nearly zero eye position offset, drastically reducing its scope shadow. It is uncertain if this is an experimental setting, glitch, or oversight by the developer.
  • Some AK-12 variants have Foregrip attached. However, the Foregrip attachment is cosmetic and does not improve the gun handling as of Version 6.0.

History

The AK-12 is a gas-operated rotating bolt assault rifle designed by Kalashnikov Concern. It is an improvement of the AK-74M rifle.

Trivia

  • The AK-12 stands for Avtomat Kalashnikova obraztza 2012 goda (Автомат Калашникова образца 2012 года)
